Places: Then, Now and Tomorrow
This unit provides opportunities for students to investigate aspects of local history such as transport, housing, Aboriginal traditions, education, women and the arrival of different cultural groups. The unit focuses on historical inquiry and the ways in which information about the past can be gathered.
Rationale - Change and Continuity
Students learn that human societies and environments are affected by change and continuity. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of knowing about the past in order to understand the present and hypothesise about the future. They also learn about sites and places and the significance of these for their own and Australia’s heritage.
Students learn about their historical roots, their shared history and the people, forces and events that have created present societies and cultures. They recognize their connections with the past and develop understandings and values about themselves and others and their heritages, what it means to be human and, in particular, what it means to be Australian. They learn about the history of the Aboriginal peoples and their contribution to Australia’s heritage.
Stage
The site is designed for a stage 2 level, however the materials can be used for any learning stage.
Outcomes
CCS2.2 Explains changes in the community and family life and evaluates the effects of these on different individuals, groups and environments.
Core Values
By identifying, clarifying, analysing and evaluating their values and attitudes as well as those of others about issues and events, students should develop informed and responsible attitudes towards people, cultures, religions, societies, environments and learning.
This will enable them to contribute to intercultural understanding and the development of a democratic and socially just society in a sustainable environment.
Christian/Biblical Perspective
Even though society has changed, Jesus’ love for us has not changed. How lucky are we!
